#1 - Be A Positive Role Model. If you do some little things around the house, like put out the garbage, purchase a roll of paper towels, or Windex the mirror in your bathroom, don't forget to point this out to your housemates. Even if you only do these things once, you are setting a good example which your indolent, slovenly Housies can learn by, but only if you mention them repeatedly, preferably in front of guests or visiting relatives.
#2 - Help Keep the Peace. If your indolent, slovenly housemates do things that annoy or offend you, don't get into a dither. Keep it to yourself. Remember, they probably can't help it, and confrontations just lead to bad blood later. Just remember all the rotten, unfair, hurtful things they said about you the last time you tried to give them some gentle guidance. And remember Uncle William's Golden Rule: Always walk, don't run, out of the room if your Housies start to argue.
#3 - Two Words: Neatness Counts. Whatever your personal space looks like to the casual observer, it can't possibly be as much of a roiling, encrusted mess as your housemates' filthy hutches. So, even though it is obviously their fault that the whole house is always in such a state, remember to make an effort. If they leave food out, take the time to put it down the disposal (even if it is still - ick - warm); if their magazines and newspapers are cluttering common space, be a friend to them and the planet and recycle. If your Housies seem angry, be nice. It's just the guilt talking.
